Single-Estate
Extra Virgin Olive Oil

About

Azeite Esplendido

This exquisite 100% single-estate extra-virgin olive oil comes from the historic Tras-os-Montes in Portugal, situated high in the hills overlooking the Douro valley. Because the area’s soil and microclimate are ideal for growing olives, the estate’s land has been cultivated for more than a thousand years. Grown without pesticides, the fruit is hand picked early in the season and immediately cold-pressed to retain its deep fruity flavors and the fresh and spicy aromas. Four classic varietals are used to produce this perfectly balanced oil:

The golden-green oil is exceptionally fragrant with grassy notes, with a spicy taste and a pleasantly peppery finish. Use in vinaigrettes, as a dip for crusty breads, and as a finishing drizzle for grilled foods and crisp-tender vegetables. Ideal for fresh fish and meats.

Olive oil is know for it’s many health benefits, and at Esplendido Douro we love sharing this information in our blog. We are committed to helping customers live a healthy life style and share recipes and ideas on our Instagram and facebook sites. Please check us out!

Douro Valley, Portugal

The Douro Valley in Portugal is a part of one of the country’s six Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) zones, a classification that ensures the highest standards in olive oil selection, harvesting, and processing. Combining the area’s unique climate and soil, centuries of growing and harvesting experience, as well as state of the art pressing and bottling technology, this region delivers one of the world’s finest, low-acidic, naturally flavorful olive oils.

Traditionally grown olive groves in the Douro Superior Valley produce the best tended olives, carefully selected, picked by hand at the perfect maturity. During the late 18thcentury, most of the country’s vineyards were decimated by small lice called Phylloxera. Olive trees were planted to replace the lost income from wine. Fortuitously, olive trees flourished with some of the finest varietals in the world, now recognized globally. Our grower has won Gold Medal and top awards at international olive oil tasting competitions, such as those in New York, Denmark, China and Portugal.

I have used olive oil through the years from so many countries, including the U.S., but I have never had Portuguese olive oil before. It has surprising and welcomed multiple layers of distinctive taste that I have not found in those other olive oils. This is now my favorite for cooking, for salad dressing, for seasoning and, the gold standard, together with balsamic vinegar, for dipping good bread.”
